A step-by-step guide for crocheting the Soft Book - Jungle by Hardicraft. The Soft Book - Jungle is approximately 12 cm x 11 cm and is made with a 2.5 mm crochet hook.
The pages are crocheted in back-and-forth rows. Ch 1 after each row and turn around. This turning-chain is not mentioned in the pattern. Crochet 4 pages with beige and 4 pages with light green.
Ch 26
1. 25 sc from the 2nd ch from the hook.
2. to 25. 25 sc
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
2. Monkey - Face
Ch 5 with beige. The face is oval, first crochet over the top of the chain and then continue along the bottom. Skip 1 ch, 3 sc, 3 sc in the next sc, 2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, close with 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 10 sc)
1. Ch 1, 2 sc, 3x (2 sc in each sc), 2 sc, 3x (2 sc in each sc), close with 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 16 sc)
2. Ch 1, 2 sc, 3x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc), 2 sc, 3x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc), close with 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 22 sc) Fasten off.
3. Head
Ch 2 with brown or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)
3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc)
4. 6 x (1 sc, 2 sc in 1 sc, 1 sc) (= 24 sc)
Close the round with 1 sl and fasten off.
Sew the face onto the head. The top of the face should be in the center of the head.
4. Ears (make 2)
Ch 2 with brown or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
Fasten off and sew the ears to each side of the head. The top of the ears should be at the same height as the top of the face.
5. Body
Ch 2 with brown or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)
3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc)
In the next round, crochet the legs and the tail. (See also the brown stitches in the diagram)
4. 1 sc, 1 sl, ch 5, skip 1 ch, 3 sc, 1 sl, 1 sc, 1 sl, ch 8, 2 sc in each ch from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sl, 1 sc, 1 sl, ch 5, skip 1 ch, 3 sc, 1 sl, 1 sc, 1 sl. Fasten off and do not cut the yarn too short.
Sew the head onto the body. The top of the head should be in the middle of the body.
6. Front Legs (make 2)
Ch 8 with brown.
1. 1 sc in each ch from the 2nd ch from the hook (= 7 sc)
Fasten off and sew the legs to the bottom of the head.
Embroider the nose with brown and 2 eyes with black on the face, see photo for placement.
7. Giraffe - Head
Ch 2 with orange or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)
3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc)
4. 6 x (1 sc, 2 sc in 1 sc, 1 sc) (= 24 sc)
5. Ch 5, skip 1 ch and crochet 1 sl, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Finish with 1 sl in the 1st stitch of round 4. Continue as follows along round 4: 3x (3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc), ch 5, skip 1 ch and crochet 1 sl, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, finish with 1 sl. Fasten off.
8. Neck
The neck is crocheted in back and forth rows. Ch 1 at the end of each row and turn. This turning-ch is not mentioned in the pattern.
Reattach with orange in stitch 7 of round 5 of the head.
1. to 7. 5 sc
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
9. Snout
Ch 2 with beige or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)
3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc)
Fasten off and sew the snout onto the head, the bottom of the snout is at the level of the 1st row of the neck.
10. Horns (crochet 2)
Crochet the horns between the ears on the top of the head with 4 stitches in between.
Attach with brown and ch 4 in the sc of row 5 of the head.
1. 3 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. Now crochet 1 sl in the remaining ch. Make 1 sl in the sc where you started. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Embroider the spots and nostrils with brown and the eyes with black, see photo for placement.
11. Crocodile
The crocodile is crocheted in back-and-forth rows. Ch 1 after each row and turn around. This turning-ch is not mentioned in the pattern.
12. Top
Ch 21 with dark green.
Crochet from the 2nd ch from the hook: 14 sc, 6 sl
2. 3x (crochet 2 sl together), crochet 14 sc
3. 1 hdc, 3 sl, 3 dc in the next sc, 1 sl, 4x (in the next stitch: 1 sl, ch 2), 2 sl. Fasten off.
13. Bottom
Ch 4 with light green, do not turn your work, but continue crocheting in the 17th ch on the belly side of the dark green part (see photo).
1. 11 sc
2. Crochet 2 sc together, 9 sc, 4 sl in the 4 ch where you started.
Fasten off and weave in all loose ends.
14. Legs (crochet 2)
Ch 4 with dark green.
1. 3 sc from the 2nd ch from the hook.
2. to 4. 2 sc
Fasten off. Sew the legs onto the body, see photo for placement.
Embroider the eye and teeth with white, and use a black thread to make the pupil for the eye.
15. Sloth - Head
Ch 5 with beige. The head is oval, first crochet over the top of the chain and then continue along the bottom.
1. Skip 1 ch, 3 sc, 3 sc in the next sc, 2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, finish with 1 sl in the first sc (= 10 sc)
2. Ch 1, 2 sc, 3x (2 sc in each sc), 2 sc, 3x (2 sc in each sc), finish with 1 sl in the first sc (= 16 sc)
3. Ch 1, 2 sc, 3x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc), 2 sc, 3x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc), finish with 1 sl in the first sc (= 22 sc)
Fasten off.
16. Face
Ch 2 with white or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the first sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)
3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc)
4. 6 x (1 sc, 2 sc in 1 sc, 1 sc) (= 24 sc)
Close the round with 1 sl and fasten off. Now sew the face onto the head. The bottom of the face aligns with the bottom of the head.
17. Eye Spots (crochet 2)
Ch 5 with brown.
1. 1 sc in each ch from the 2nd ch from the hook (= 4 sc)
Fasten off and sew the eye spots onto the head. (See photo for placement). Now embroider the eyes, mouth, and nose on the face with black.
18. Body
Ch 5 with beige. The body is oval, first crochet over the top of the chain and then continue along the bottom.
1. Skip 1 ch, 3 sc, 3 sc in the next sc, 2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, close with 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 10 sc)
2. Ch 1, 2 sc, 3x (2 sc in each sc), 2 sc, 3x (2 sc in each sc), close with 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 16 sc)
3. Ch 1, 2 sc, 3x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc), 2 sc, 3x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc), close with 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 22 sc)
4. Ch 1, 2 sc, 3x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 1 sc), 2 sc, 3x (1 sc, 2 sc in the next sc, 1 sc) (= 28 sc) Do not fasten off.
You will now crochet the legs. The legs are crocheted in back-and-forth rows. Ch 1 after each row and turn around. This turning-ch is not mentioned in the pattern.

6. Crochet 2 sc together, 1 sc (= 2 sc)
7. 2 sc
Fasten off.
Now crochet the 2nd leg. Start in stitch 5 of row 4 of the body.

19. Tiger - Snout
Ch 2 with white or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)
3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc)
Fasten off, but do not cut the thread too short.
20. Nose
Ch 2 with black.
1. 2 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook.
2. Turn the work and crochet 2 sc in each sc
Fasten off, do not cut the thread too short and sew the nose onto the snout. Do not cut the thread.
Embroider a vertical line under the nose with the black thread.
21. Head
Ch 2 with orange or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 1st ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)
3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc)
4. 6 x (1 sc, 2 sc in 1 sc, 1 sc) (= 24 sc)
5. 2 sc in every 4th sc (= 30 sc)
6. In the 1st sc (1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc), 6 sl, in the 8th sc (1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc), close the round with 1 sl and fasten off. Now sew the snout onto the head (see photo for placement).
22. Body
The body is crocheted in back-and-forth rows. Ch 1 at the end of each row and turn around. This turning-ch is not mentioned in the pattern.
Ch 8 with orange.
1. Crochet 7 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook.
2. and 3. 7 sc
Now continue with the legs.
4. 3 sc, turn your work.
5. 3 sc
6. 2 sc in each sc (= 6 sc) and fasten off.
Reattach with orange in stitch 4 of row 3, repeat rows 4 to 6. Fasten off and weave in the loose ends. Sew the head onto the body. The bottom of the head is positioned between rows 2 and 3 of the body.
23. Tail
Ch 12 with orange.
1. 1 sl in each ch.
Fasten off. Sew the tail to the back of your little tiger, at the level of the bottom of the head.
Embroider the eyes and stripes on the head and body with black (see photo for placement).
24. Panda - Body
Ch 2 with white or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in each sc (= 12 sc)
3. 2 sc in every 2nd sc (= 18 sc), close the round with 1 sl
Continue with black.
4. 24 sc
Close the round with 1 sl and fasten off.
25. Head
Ch 2 with white or start with a magic ring.

28. Arms (crochet 2)
Ch 5 with black.

Fasten off and sew the arms onto the body, see photo for placement.
29. Feet (crochet 2)
Ch 2 with black or start with a magic ring.
1. 6 sc in the 2nd ch or in the magic ring, 1 sl in the 1st sc (= 6 sc)
2. 2 sc in the 1st sc and 2nd sc, 1 sl
Fasten off and sew the feet onto the body.
30. Snake
Ch 40 with dark green.
1. Crochet from the 2nd ch from the hook: 9 sl, 20 sc, 5 hdc, 2 sc, 1 sl (leave the last 2 ch of the chain unworked).
2. Ch 5, turn your work and crochet from the 2nd ch from the hook: 2 sl, 3 sc, 1 sl
3. Turn your work, crochet 1 sl, 3 sc, 1 sl
Fasten off.
The snake will later be wrapped around a branch before it is embroidered onto the page. Then embroider a tongue with orange.
31. Branch (crochet 3)
Ch 24 with brown.
1. 9 sc from the 2nd ch from the hook, 7 ch, skip 1 ch, 20 sc
Fasten off, leaving a long thread to sew the branch onto a page.
32. Leaves (crochet 2 with light green and 4 with dark green)
Ch 4, 1 sl, 1 sc, 1 sl from the 2nd ch from the hook. Do not turn. Ch 4, 1 sl, 1 sc, 1 sl from the 2nd ch from the hook. Finish with 1 sl. Fasten off, leaving a long thread to sew the leaves onto a page.
33. Vine
Ch 7 with light green. Crochet 1 sl in the 4th ch from the hook, repeat 6 times. Ch 3. Fasten off, do not cut the yarn too short, so you can sew the vine later.
34. Assembly and Finishing
Now embroider all the animals, branches, leaves, and the vine onto a page. Use the photos as a guide for placement or let your imagination run wild!
Once you have sewn on all the appliqués, place the pages with the backs against each other.
Crochet a row of sc with dark green along the pages as follows: 24 sc along the side, 3 sc at the corner, 23 sc along the bottom, 3 sc at the corner, 23 sc along the side, 3 sc at the corner, 24 sc along the top. Close with 1 sl in the first stitch of the row.
Now sew the pages together. Cut a thread of about a meter. Place the first two pages on top of each other and sew them together by zigzagging under the loops of the sc row. Then place page 3 on top and zigzag under the sc loops of pages 2 and 3. Repeat this with page 4. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
