  1. 1. Load the Palette Knife with Paint

    Begin by scooping a generous amount of dark-colored paint onto a large palette knife. Hold the knife firmly, similar to how you would hold a spatula. This allows for confident, bold strokes when applying paint to the canvas.

    Tip: Choose a dark color that will contrast well against your background.

  2. 2. Apply Thick Paint with Bold Movements

    Press the knife flat against the canvas and drag it smoothly across the surface. This creates thick, textured layers of paint. Use the side of the blade to shape the stroke as you move.

    Tip: Vary your pressure. Light pressure gives thin coverage, while heavier pressure creates depth and texture.

  3. 3. Draw Sharp Lines with the Edge

    Use the edge of the knife to draw fine lines or define shapes within the painting. This step is useful for creating structural elements like the edge of a sail or the mast of a boat.

    Tip: Let the natural texture of the canvas and underlying paint guide the motion of your hand.

  4. 4. Add Highlights and Refine Shapes
